Poem: Holidays & Loss

Bian Jingzhao-Snow Plum and Twin Cranes

独在异乡为异客,
Alone in a strange land, and I a stranger,
每逢佳节倍思亲。
Come holidays my thoughts of home renew.
遥知兄弟登高处,
In my mind’s eye, my brothers climb the hill,
遍插茱萸少一人。
Adorned with dogwood – but there’s one too few.

Such a simple, yet eloquent, expression of loneliness and loss. Gorgeous writing.

I’m sorry there’s one fewer climbing that hill, and that the holidays won’t be too difficult because of it. I’ve been spending a lot of time escaping into fiction, both reading and writing, as a way to deal with . . . everything.
